ABOUT QULEN BLACKWELL:

Quilen Blackwell is a visionary leader dedicated to empowering inner-city youth and transforming communities through sustainable social enterprises. As the president and co-founder of the Chicago Eco House, he has spearheaded initiatives aimed at alleviating poverty and fostering environmental stewardship. One of their flagship programs, Southside Blooms, is an off-grid flower farm youth social enterprise that converts vacant lots into commercial flower farms using solar-powered rainwater irrigation. This innovative initiative not only creates jobs for young people on the south and west sides of Chicago but also beautifies neighborhoods and promotes sustainability.

 

Quilen’s commitment to community empowerment has been recognized through numerous awards, including the UL Innovation Education Award, Delta Institute BOOST Award, Keep Chicago Beautiful Community Vision Award, and the African American Legacy Award. His journey began in Madison, WI, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Inspired by his experiences volunteering in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood during ministry school, Quilen decided to dedicate his life to creating opportunities for inner-city youth.

 

With a master’s degree in environmental policy and sustainability from the University of Denver, Quilen brings a unique blend of expertise in community organizing and renewable energy to his work. Prior to founding the Chicago Eco House, he gained experience in the biodiesel industry and served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand.

 

Quilen currently resides on the south side of Chicago with his wife Hannah, who is also a co-founder of the Eco House, and their three young children. Together, they are committed to building a brighter future for their community and beyond.
