Black Excellence: Tristan Walker Founder of Walker & Co. Raises $24M, Lands Bevel Deal with Target
There’s a lot of black excellence happening in media today, and we just can’t get enough of it!
This week started off with Walker & Company Brands, Inc, founded by Tristan Walker, making the huge announcement that they have raised $24M in new funding, and inked a deal with Target to sell their Bevel brand in select stores and online next year. Bevel is a 5-part system that uses a single-blade shaving system designed specifically for coarse, curly hair, and sensitive skin. The dermatologically tested brand has been clinically proven to reduce razor bumps and prevent skin irritation, an issue faced by up to 80% of both black men and women.
The company has gained attention from top venture capitalist and a slew of celebrity investors like Nas, Magic Johnson, John Legend, and basketball player Andre Iguodala to name a few. Walker told Forbes he’s making health and beauty simple for all people of color.
Walker & Company, Inc made a huge statement when turning down a half billion dollar offer for a buy-out from Procter & Gamble, Schick, and Gillette in order to keep the brand black-owned.
This is the definition of black excellence and we love it.
The Man Behind the Brand:
A graduate of Stanford Business School, thirty-one year old Tristan Walker founded Walker & Company in 2013 after leaving Foursquare. He then went on to become the first African-American entrepreneur in residence to be accepted by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.
