Siza Mzimela: The First Black Woman To Own An Airline
Siza Mzimela is proof that the sky isn’t the limit.
The former CEO of South African Airways and South African Express made history this year after becoming the first black woman to launch her own airline Fly Blue Crane. The independent South African airline currently has two 50-seat ERJ 145s offering flights from Johannesburg (JNB) to Bloemfontein (BFN), Kimberley (KIM), and Nelspruit (MQP), at rates that are 15-20% cheaper than its competitors. “The brand has positioned itself to deliver what customers want- the enhanced convenience of frequent flies through high on-time performance, commitment to consistent service excellence, advanced online technologies that will make the booking and travel fuss-free, and of course highly competitive fares,” says Siza.
When flying Fly Blue Crane, you can expect complimentary quality meals, 50% off children’s fares, and free baggage allowance on your single class flight. Mzimela mentions future plans of expanding flight destinations to Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Currently flights are being offered from Johannesburg to:
- Bloemfontein-five times a day during the week, twice on Saturdays and three times on Sundays
- Kimberley- three times a day during the week, once on Saturdays and twice on Sundays
- Nelspruit- twice daily Mondays to Fridays, once on Saturdays, and once on Sundays
The woman behind the brand:
No newbie to the aviation industry, Siza was making history before Fly Blue Crane. After graduating from the University of Swaziland with a degree in Economics and Statistics, Mzimela served as a research analyst at the largest airline in Africa, South African Airways (SAA). She made history while CEO at SAA by introducing the first non-stop flights to New York and Beijing, China. She later went on to become the first female in 67 years to serve on the board of directors at the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Siza Mzimela is a true definition of black excellence.
